Heat & UV Exposure
Posted on February 22, 2019 by Cheryl Shepherd

With Australian summers being well known for having days of extreme heat, its imperetive that PCBU’s manage risks associated with heat stress and solar UV radiation in the workplace.

Each workplace environment is different, and the employer must manage any risks, in consultation with their workers.

Employers (duty holders) have a duty of care to ensure they are not putting their workers’ health and safety at risk.

Workers have a responsibility to take care of their own health and safety.

Some tips on avoiding heat stress –

DO:

  • Drink plently of water throughout the day
    • Stay hydrated
  • Apply sunscreen
    • And reapply as needed
  • Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs
  • Wear a hat
    • With suitable coverage
  • Take frequent rest breaks in the shade

DON’T:

  • Drink Caffeine, alcohol or sugary drinks
